‘Long’ was the warning I’d had from others who had made the trip.

I look out the window as we cross the East River and there the majestic “Waterfall” floods down in the afternoon sunshine. I’m to see later in the evening on my return journey a new version – it’s now electric blue as the stars come out, and the black outline of the Brooklyn Bridge bares a trailing veil of white water. It is Illuminated by the light.

It’s half way there and the window now displays a fantastic array of grey and yellow industrial debris, rusting iron, scaffold and painted wood. Quite delectable for photography, but alas we are moving too fast. Note to self – one day I’ll brave the train tracks and bring my camera.

At Coney it’s hot. Off the subway and onto a street spilling over with participants from the freak show – at $7.50 it’s a unique experience. I see tattoos walking towards me, with head bandanas and pointy tipped plastic lenses peering from underneath orange paroxide locks. I’m entranced as the doyenne of ‘da’ ‘hood, all 5′ of her, clad in black and red striped mini-magnificence, twaddles past with her entourage of family members. It’s a family day.
