Luke Irwin Ikat Rugs
It’s that time again; time to talk about ikat.
It is a ceramic house which has held great influence in it’s field since it’s beginnings in 1759, not least being the reference for a particular cast of heavenly blue.
The lustrous petal emenate from the central stamen, growing into large petal clusters.

The shadows dance and light bursts intermittently through various tints of old glass. It all hints at the warm glow of hearts within made merry on mead (or something along that vein).
His work is so structural. The shape of magyar seams and the use of large sleeve structures reminded me of Henri Moore’s sculptural monoliths, only Balenciaga’s monoliths have bows, tassels and cinched waists.
It’s just the dash of brushstroke and the sparing elegance of it all!
The hand-painted wavy lines and dots; the appliqued zig-zags and the beaded droplet shapes are so simplistic and yet so striking, strong and playful. And not least it is about the love of fabric teamed with movement; and of the textile, in it’s many shades and draperies.
