Paris flea markets abound with chairs, books, vintage clothing, ceramics and textiles. Flea chairs are a tad difficult to carry on the metro, let alone back to a guest couch, so if travelling light you will sadly need to forgo such purchases. In any case Puce de Vanves will furnish any manner of smaller, suit-case-worthy items that one can scurry away home with. The trick is to only buy as much as you can carry, and to take spare hands, and bubble wrap to ensure your finds survive Le Metro. Suffice it to say: I shall be back.

And so to Berlin, Berlin! and the work of Berlin fashion designer Alba Prat, a sculptural and breathtakingly post-post-modern voice. Her Tron-inspired collection, “Digitalized,” features laser-cut cubic-patterns and 3-D optical shapes. The rounded and hexagonal structures are Lasercut Neoprene. They reference ‘pixelation’, technology and the connectivity of forms and modules. Where will it all end? it’s looking very outer-spacey in design these days! Time to watch Blade Runner again.

This brooch and necklace set is part of the jewellery collection of the National Museum of Ireland. The intricacy of the woven horsehair strands; their red dyed coloration and the tiny scale of brooch and necklace components is perhaps not surprising for a country with such a lace-making heritage. It certainly makes sense that with the time taken to craft such intricate loops, tracery and knots one would be wise to use such a durable yet fine fibre as horsehair. It was a common component for many daily used items; from upholstery fabric to mattress stuffing. This one might agree is perhaps a far more respectable use for the mane of such a majestic creature. Both pieces are from the early nineteenth century and were made in the seaside town of Youghal in County Cork.

The bio reads ‘she studied applied science and worked as a radiographer before fashion’… an interesting combination, and this beautiful uniqueness is not lost on the work of it’s creator Brook Roberts. Her second knit collection has a clarity of line and balance that harks back to Courrege in some respects. I am drawn by the wrapping of body and curve in structured geometric mesh; two opposing ideas that tailor into each other seamlessly here.

Roberts draws inspiration from x-rays and CT scans, body-mapping and contouring the human form. For AW2011 the collection teams with accessories from Eye of the World; a collaboration between Liam Motyer [a teacher] and Hope Von Joel [a stylist]. Each wooded accessory is uniquely crafted and finished by hand in London. Both design firms have together achieved a subtle balance in which each piece offsets and carries the other into a higher vision.

This piece, by Sybil Connolly, in the National Museum carries the idea of smocking to sculptural heights; an evening gown, made of hand-pleated handkerchief-weight linen. Nine yards of unpleated linen was required to make one yard of the pleated fabric. Linen, a notoriously creasing fabric, is fairly crease resistant when smocked. The gown would likely have been quite light and very comfortable since the fiber breaths and is quite absorbent, making for a gown that is both beautiful, form fitting and comfortable. This piece was made in 1970 for Lady Beit of Russborough House in County Wicklow; whose stately home is now open to the public and well worth a visit.

Meandering through the National Museum of Ireland’s decorative arts collection you’ll find more of the beautiful collection of couture pieces by Irish couturier Sybil Connolly. A retrospective of her work at The Hunt Museum Limerick has a great collection of images and information on the designer. She led the way for a generation of Irish fashion designers. Her designs became collectors items in the United States, where she dressed Rockefellers, Mellons, Duponts and Jacqueline Kennedy, who wore a Sybil Connolly design for her official White House portrait.

..."Seventeenth-century lace has a voluminous character—rather than the light and airy form of later periods—reflecting an era when luxury was equated with grandeur...

There are times when I understand how little I know; about anything really. For instance, I’ve been without a television for 3 years now. I’ve never read so much in my life, and yet, I’ve not read very much in the scheme of libraries and writers. The more I read the more I learn just how little I have read. The more I travel the more I realise how few are the shores on which I’ve stood, how numerous are the galleries I have still not visited, and how much I would like to do when I finally get to some of them.

It is disturbing to think of the mind’s plans and the actuality of life. What we create in the picture of our mental vision shines inside our cranium and the picture tube of our heart. The only solace in all this is that my mental faculty has not been harnessed by some other framework of programming, and I remain ‘Lady’ of my inner satellite station. To put it another way, four hours of a back-to-back-episodes marathon of ‘gossip girl’ or ‘hollywood movie classics’; in which I have no gain by the chosen content, no power to influence the outcome of each episode, and no interactive learning to complete; is basically a relic of my near distant past. Simply said the inactive stimuli is no longer taking up my time. I watch pieces of lace behind glass screens and dream up manipulations and utilities, which has translated to a collection of lacy bits and pieces. What still needs to evolve in this equation is the actual activity of processing the thoughts into action, but at least in 3 years I’ve progressed to a more articulated idea of expressed inner perception.

Cut work and Needle laces from Italy in the late 16th, early 17th Century; from the Metropolitan Museum collections. “Seventeenth-century lace has a voluminous character—rather than the light and airy form of later periods—reflecting an era when luxury was equated with grandeur…

Perhaps it comes down to that simple adage: ‘a stitch in time saves nine’.

Prada skips into a brave new world...

Prada has gone into real fantasy mode this season, SS 2011. Perhaps they are in a fantasy in which the economic crisis has completely fizzled and given way to piña colada punch bowls of cash, or perhaps that was the dream they had last year when the days were darker and the horizon bleaker for the luxury market, in any sector. Now, whether things have swung back into the breach or not, they are at least putting on a brave and new face; colour and splash! The design ethos of the season touts the Baroque era of struggle, passion and grappling with craft in an every wide-eyed world as being aligned with our current global reality. It’s not dissimilar to Hollywood 30s optimism and an emergence of fantasy as queen. Somehow shiny and bright coloured plastics are never far away when such a mood is in swing. We shall see if there is also a grand penchant for clouds… which I think, though perhaps still only in the stirring, there is.

Again excerpts from the exhibit last year at New York’s Spanish Institute a focus; this time spots. Black on white, Red on White, White on Red, White on Black; all are characteristic costume combinations for traditional flamenco. I always think of solid red flounces in a vibrant engine tone when I think of flamenco, and perhaps it’s the colour I respond to most whenever I’ve seen it performed; most memorably by Sara Baras’ stirring amalgam of flamenco and ballet. Sara Baras performing.

This evening dress used Lesage silk satin organza from the summer of 1964 and is in the collection of the Balenciaga Archives in Paris. It holds the classic silhouette with a train that floats away from the body and that can be pulled up to the shoulders or worn as a cape. The volumes and ruffles carry the movement of the dancer beyond themselves and extend the reality of movement outwards.

This shawl dress was part of the collection on exhibit at the Spanish Institute, New York, and curated by Hamish Bowles. The central motif is emblazoned at such a grand scale it takes over the entire piece. The embroidered satin stitch reminds me of Chinese pieces, where the floral elements again were typically created using long and graded satin stitches. The lustrous petals emanate from the central stamen, growing into large petal clusters. The wrap of the shawl around the curve of a shoulder is taken further; in Balenciaga’s hands the petals wrap the entire body in a close skimming column dress.
