Natural beauty, pantomime and surrealism collide in the paintings of Linda Herzog. Of fairytale and the like do they fair, and something akin to the verse of The Brothers Grimm comes to mind…:

Various designers playing with the idea of graphic enticements of the book covering variety. This binding by artist Diane Kelly harks back to 60′s geometric interplays and colour fixations. More can be seen at the Gallery Red exhibition which shows every year in Glebe, Sydney.

Paris flea markets abound with chairs, books, vintage clothing, ceramics and textiles. Flea chairs are a tad difficult to carry on the metro, let alone back to a guest couch, so if travelling light you will sadly need to forgo such purchases. In any case Puce de Vanves will furnish any manner of smaller, suit-case-worthy items that one can scurry away home with. The trick is to only buy as much as you can carry, and to take spare hands, and bubble wrap to ensure your finds survive Le Metro. Suffice it to say: I shall be back.

Having just recently seen the Postmodern exhibition at the V&A I have been pondering the idea of cross pollination in design. It’s easy to look back at the past and think that all other eras knew their own minds and with purist zeal were able to create entirely new work, for and of the time, without reference to their predecessors or neighbours. Not so at all, which is one reason why I love scouting around the decorative arts in museums so much. Perhaps they validate my penchant for re-appropriation. Influence, or inspiration?; magical words that treat us to new ideas and open an old way to a new frame of vision.

One constantly trips over such influences as seen in this little side chair. I’m taken with the wool petit point embroidery detail from a collection at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. It’s Mid 18th Century upholstery, Venetian ‘gilded’ (or tainted depending on your viewpoint) with a Rococco-Parisian ‘brush’.

This piece at Frieze caught my eye. Unfortunately as seems to always happen at least once in these fairs I walk away with some work or other stuck in my mind and no reference to it’s originator. I’d appreciate anyone rectifying this with names and details. In the meantime I’m left with this gorgeous sculptural piece in the memory, joined with seams of gold; tactile and re-appropriated globules or cold, crackled china.

The work is graphite and coloured pencil on antique ledger, titled ‘Couple with Clock Tower’.

Coates' latest collection delves into bones and limbs, joints that connect and form skeletal frameworks that sustain weight....the genesis of this idea had come from thinking about the body's supporting structures and one stool in particular that had started the ball rolling.

London Design Week and a long and indefatigable list of showrooms and spin-off fairs to attend might easily see one panting for air and reaching or one too many sustaining latte’s to propel one onwards. Overloaded with functional/form-full visions throughout the fair I found myself near fainting when I stepped into the peaceful South Kensington studio of architect and designer Nigel Coates. His contribution to design and architecture from projects, to products and institutions, spans many years.

Coates’ latest collection delves into bones and limbs, joints that connect and form skeletal frameworks that sustain weight. In his drawings of the connecting structures one can see at the heart a reference to the human form and life drawing. I asked Coates’ if this was the case and he confirmed that the genesis of this idea had come from thinking about the body’s supporting structures and one stool in particular that had started the ball rolling. Coates showed me his ‘Genie Stool’, with three limbs and the cradle of what seemed to be wood crafted pelvic bones. It reminded me of the primitive African stools that I grew up with. These had been three-stick structures, held together by a leather pouch. The seat cradled the sitter quite naturally, the posture falling into a crouching stance. The result is quite a comfortable structure to rest in.

Each piece was formed in collaboration with Italian company Poltronova. Coates’ short film beautifully outlines the design process with Poltronova and the drawings that worked through the idea. The images here are of the ‘Domo’ pieces which feature sandblasted and sculpted oak. The Plasma chair is an indoor/outdoor piece of steel and leather. More information is available via his studio.

And so to Berlin, Berlin! and the work of Berlin fashion designer Alba Prat, a sculptural and breathtakingly post-post-modern voice. Her Tron-inspired collection, “Digitalized,” features laser-cut cubic-patterns and 3-D optical shapes. The rounded and hexagonal structures are Lasercut Neoprene. They reference ‘pixelation’, technology and the connectivity of forms and modules. Where will it all end? it’s looking very outer-spacey in design these days! Time to watch Blade Runner again.
