I first saw Shotz’s work at the Armory Fair, 2009. The sculpture was spectacular in its capture of light and iridescence. I’ve seen countless shapes along the lines of that sculptural piece within the design community; in light fittings, wall coverings, fabrics and objects, leading me to assume that the movement and beauty of colour and form in her work must have inspired these designers. Who knows where inspirations come from, but since there really isn’t much new new under the sun I think the only one of a few things that is new is our own realisation of the things we love.
Shotz’s work has in the past been shown at the Guggenheim Museum, along with various gallery shows. Forthcoming shows include solo shows at Espace Louis Vuitton, Tokyo Japan later this year, and the Phillips Collection in D.C. in 2012.
The work shown here is a piece called Standing Wave, that was installed at the Wexner Art Center, Columbus Ohio in 2010.
