It’s that time again; time to talk about ikat. It’s an urge that comes on every time I see some form of the cloth; and I’ve been seeing a lot of it lately. Let’s go back three years ago in January when the Victoria and Albert Museum was wrapping up a sterling exhibit of ikat finds. What a collection it was. It’s my guess that the V&A exhibit inspired the current ikat mania in showrooms and on catwalks. Rug collections are the latest product line to take a direct hit. But there are those who have been devotees of this cloth despite the winds of trend. I saw ikat rugs at ABC Carpet & Home this time last year. People such as Ptolemy Mann use Ikat as a centrifugal force to their body of work in wider terms; more on her work soon. When it comes to iterations in flooring I think I’ve given my loudest gasp to the newest collection of rug designer Luke Irwin. He’s captured something of the rag and ware on Ikat warps over time, the fade of Ikat silks, the surface of vintage ikat collector pieces. I love them.
