In the Metropolitan Opera House, New York there are various showcases displaying intricate costumes from the past. It’s a pleasant way to spend the fifteen minutes of Interval time meandering up and down the galleries around the spectacular ‘Sputnik’ chandeliers that hang about the space. These were a gift from the Austrian Government, manufactured by Austrian Chandelier makers J. & L Lobmeyr and were installed in May 1966. A total of 11 chandeliers crown the lobby with the addition of 21 in the auditorium.
Austria also contributed the renowned soprano Maria Jeritza, who made the US [and the Metropolitan Opera House] her home and in 1921-22 she sang Tosca in this spectacular costume of silk velvet with intricate beading and embroidery.
