Baralaye; LIC artists open doors

May 30th and 31st see an open artist’s studio festival spanning 2 days. Sixteen studio venues throughout Long Island City are participating in the festival, with countless artist’s studios open from 1pm -6pm both days.

There is so much to glean from seeing an artist at work in their own space. For all it is a great opportunity to find new work, new talent and the heart of the creative process. It is a chance not only to meet them face to face, but to see the development of their work, their trials and triumphs.

In the studio of sculptor Ebitenyefa Baralaye earthen forms line the shelves in various media, including sandblasted and glazed ceramics, casts, models and bronze.
The works are at once an interplay of smooth surfaced geometry alive in abstract shape, with the simple imperfection of an irregular twist, a thumb print or a vein stamping the surface. There are articulations in the work, and yet there is also the unplanned and implicit life of imperfection.

The Long Island festivities last all weekend and coincide with the celebrations of the anniversary for the Queensboro Bridge.
