The current photographic show at Roth Gallery is a selection of images taken by Keizo Kitajima in Okinawa in 1980.
Over a period of time Kitajima snapped the night life around the red-light district and the US serviceman who flocked there for entertainment and diversion.

The images, silk screens on metalic ground, capture something of the fragmented quality of their subjects. The trysts between asian beauties and young foreigners appear cool and transient, yet the seedy newsprint monochrome shows a common and vibrant humanity. A fascinating dichotemy of ideas arise in ones mind on viewing the images; were these comrades out celebrating together or on a mission? What are the young men in check shirts doing? Did they find love?
The show continues until June 6. Ask to see the limited edition book with prints.
